The first reason why people get stuck in their past is because they are unwilling to forgive themselves. If you hold on to regret or guilt, then there is no space for anything else in your life. Holding onto these feelings just causes more stress and anxiety, which will eventually lead you down a path of unhappiness. One way that holding onto your past hurts you is by making you less willing to experience new things as a result of being scared that it may remind you of something from your past that caused pain. This will have an adverse effect on your ability to enjoy life as well as your relationships with friends and family and professional life as well.
The process of letting go can be difficult. We often feel a sense of loss and sometimes guilt, but the reality is that we need to make room for new experiences and time to reflect.
